Academic education
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart on March 2, 1987, with a final mark of 105/110. He obtained his professional license at the same University during the April 1987 examination session. In April 1987, he began his training as a visiting physician in the Orthopedics Department of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital. In the 1987/88 academic year, he was admitted to the Residency Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
He attended the Orthopedic Clinic as an in-house trainee from March 1987 to July 1988, taking part in ward activities, the casting room, and the operating theatre. In July 1988, he was appointed Contract Assistant in the Second Division of Orthopedics and Traumatology at the Scientific Research Institute of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital.
On July 14, 1992, he obtained his specialization in Orthopedics and Traumatology from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart with a final mark of 50/50 cum laude, defending the thesis “CT scan as an early assessment method in the treatment of congenital hip dislocation.”
He completed international training courses in foot surgery at the Hospital S. Rafael in Barcelona; in pediatric orthopedic surgery and scoliosis surgery at the Children’s Hospital, Harvard University, Boston; and in orthopedic surgery for patients with cerebral lesions at the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry.
Clinical activity
He worked as an orthopedic consultant for the Italian Association for the Fight Against Muscular Dystrophy (1991–1993), the Opera Don Guanella (1993–1998 and again 2011–2015), the A.I.A.S. Centers of Castellammare di Stabia (1994–2004) and Afragola (1997–2004), and the Pediatric Neurorehabilitation Department of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute (1997–2007).
From September 1989 to the present, he has performed more than 10,000 surgical procedures as first operator at the Orthopedic Unit of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital.
In July 2007, he was appointed Head of the Advanced Specialization Program in “Orthopedic Surgery of Spasticity” within the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital.
In July 2010, his appointment as Head of the Advanced Specialization Program in “Neuro-Orthopedics” at the Department of Surgery and Transplant Center in Rome was confirmed. In December 2011, he was appointed Head of the Simple Structure Unit of Neuro-Orthopedics within the Surgical Department, an appointment reconfirmed in December 2014 and again in December 2017.
In January 2019, he was appointed Head of the Complex Structure Unit of Orthopedics at the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital (renamed “Orthopedics and Traumatology” in October 2025).
Since 2023, he has served as Delegate of the Scientific Director and representative of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital within the Musculoskeletal Network of the Ministry of Health, which coordinates and promotes musculoskeletal research at the national level.
Academic and research activity
He serves as Lecturer in the Residency Program in Orthopedics and Traumatology at Campus Bio-Medico University (a.y. 2018/2019 – present) and at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (a.y. 2023/2024 – present). He has held and continues to hold teaching appointments as lecturer in first- and second-level Master’s programs (Sapienza University of Rome, Campus Bio-Medico University) within the scientific-disciplinary sector Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System. He also teaches in the PhD Program at San Raffaele University of Rome.
He has obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the position of Full Professor in the competitive sector Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System and Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine.
He has served as Co-investigator and Principal Investigator in national and international research projects, primarily focused on pediatric orthopedics and the biomechanics of human movement.
